December 2009.
Next club meeting - Monday 4th January 2009.
Meetings are held at the Abbey Baptist Church, Abbey Square, commencing at 7.00 p.m.
Winter Social
The Winter Social took the form of a Christmas meal at the Round Oak pub in Padworth. Twelve members and ten “plus ones” braved the torrential downpours to attend this year’s event, and were greeted by a warm log fire, and a few familiar faces! The common consensus was that good food and good company (if not good weather!) were had by all, and we thank the Round Oak for hosting us.
December meeting
The Winter Bourse was a success as usual, with a number of additional dealer tables set out, and some lovely numismatic
items for sale and on display. The Acquisitions displays included a lovely example of a Coin Book as used by European traders
to establish currency conversions, and a very nice countermarked 1797 George III Penny.
Once again, Henry produced a veritable feast with everything from cheese and pineapple sticks to mince pies,
and we thank him very much for his efforts.
Gavin also provided us with a numismatic quiz to test the grey matter. The questions were taxing as per normal, such as ‘What is the meaning of George III’s abbreviated title S.R.I.A.T ET E?” Unfortunately, I am unable to read my own writing, and Google has let me down, so I will ask Gavin to furnish me with the answer in time for the next newsletter! We congratulate Frank, who was the top scorer with 13 out of a maximum of 20.
Thank you very much to all who attended, making the evening very enjoyable.
As last year, there was a quiz which Gavin Scott had organised, details given below and answers to follow in next month’s newsletter for those of you not there on the night. It was a close competition and came down to a tie-break between Neil Beaton and Frank Milward. After five tie-break questions Neil finally got his nose ahead of Frank and won the competition.
A very entertaining evening and one firmly fixed in the Club’s calendar.Future Meetings
The next meeting is the annual Short Talks evening. If any member is willing to talk on any numismatically related subject to try and win the Marc Myhill Memorial shield for this season, please contact a member of the committee.
The club auction is due to take place at the February meeting. Please bring along your coins, medals, tokens, banknotes and any other numismatic material to the January meeting and hand them to any committee member. If we all put in just a few lots we can make this an enjoyable and successful evening. The auction commission charge will be 10% of the hammer price.
